[Macao Daily News] The election for the fifth-term Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region was held at the East Asian Games Dome at 10 am on August 25. After about one hour of voting and ticketing, among the 400 votes of the Election Committee, it turned out that Ho Iat-seng garnered 392 votes in favor, seven abstentions and one invalid with a percentage of votes at 98%.
Although there was one invalid ticket, according to the Chief Executive Electoral Law in Annex I of the Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, the only candidate, Ho Iat-seng, who won more than half of all votes of the election committee, that is, more than 200 votes, was legitimate to be elected. In another word, Ho Iat-seng has been elected as the fifth-term Macao Chief Executive.
According to the provisions of the Chief Executive Electoral Law, the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region shall be appointed by the Central People's Government after being elected by a broadly representative Election Committee.
The term of office of the fifth Chief Executive will be from December 20, 2019 to December 19, 2024.
After Song Man Lei, president of the Chief Executive election management committee, announced the results, election committee members present congratulated Ho with warm applause. Ho expressed thanks to those committee members and the general public.
Ho Iat-seng said, " This election has made me deeply aware of the spirits of Macao society, which is solidarity, endeavor, diversity, openness, harmony and tolerance. I have also had a deeper understanding of the profound significance of our core values, patriotism and love for Macao. I am grateful to the nation and Macao for the patronage, I am grateful to Macao residents and all social circles for their long-term support, and I am grateful to all election committee members for their trust and support. I will unswervingly carry out my duties with integrity and honesty, and work with Macao residents, people from all walks of life and all civil servants to make greater efforts and contributions to realize the great rejuvenation of the nation, continue to promote the cause of "one country, two systems", and the prosperity and long-term stability of the Macao SAR."
